Treatment Approaches:

Second to choosing a good individual counselor, exploring which treatment approach matches your mental health concern as well as your personal preference and comfort is important as well. Types of treatments are matched to diagnoses based on evidenced based best practices. Below is a sample and descriptions of some of the treatment orientations I offer.

You can be assured – I have a commitment to excellence when it comes to the level of care I provide.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an information processing therapy that helps clients cope with trauma, addictions, and phobias. During this treatment, the client focuses on a specific thought, image, emotion, or sensation while simultaneously watching the therapist's finger move in front of his or her eyes. The client is told to recognize what comes up for them when thinking of an image; then the client is told to let it go while doing bilateral stimulation. It's like being on a train; an emotion or a thought may come up and the client lets it pass as though they were looking out the window of the moving train.

Gestalt

Gestalt therapy seeks to integrate the client's behaviors, feelings, and thinking, so that their intentions and actions may be aligned for optimal mental health. The therapist will help the client become more self aware, to live more in the present, and to assume more responsibility for taking care of themself. Techniques of Gestalt therapy include confrontation, dream analysis, and role playing.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a method of therapy that works to engage the motivation of clients to change their behavior. Clients are encouraged to explore and confront their ambivalence. Therapists attempt to influence their clients to consider making changes, rather than non-directively explore themselves. Motivational Interviewing is frequently used in cases of problem drinking or addictions.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal therapy is a short-term psychotherapy in which therapist and client identify the issues and problems of interpersonal relationships. They also explore the client's life history to help recognize problem areas and then work toward ways to rectify them.
